Z/pZ is a field for p prime
Builds on FieldA finite integral domain is a field
Statement
Let be an integer. The ring of integers modulo is a field if and only if is a prime number.
Remarks
If with , then the classes of and are nonzero and their product is . So is not an integral domain. If is prime and , then Bézout's identity gives for some integers . So is an inverse of modulo . The field is often written . It is the smallest finite field of characteristic .
