Definition

Let kk be a field and let XX be a scheme over kk. Let Artk\mathrm{Art}_k be the category of local Artinian kk-algebras AA with residue field kk. For A∈ArtkA \in \mathrm{Art}_k, a deformation of XX over AA is a pair (𝒳,Ο•)(\mathcal{X}, \phi) where:

  1. 𝒳\mathcal{X} is a scheme with a flat morphism 𝒳→Spec⁑A\mathcal{X} \to \operatorname{Spec} A;
  2. ϕ ⁣:𝒳×Spec⁑ASpec⁑kβ†’X\phi \colon \mathcal{X} \times_{\operatorname{Spec} A} \operatorname{Spec} k \to X is an isomorphism of kk-schemes, where the left side is a fiber product.

Two deformations (𝒳,Ο•)(\mathcal{X}, \phi) and (𝒳′,Ο•β€²)(\mathcal{X}', \phi') are isomorphic if there is an isomorphism 𝒳→𝒳′\mathcal{X} \to \mathcal{X}' over AA compatible with Ο•\phi and Ο•β€²\phi'. The deformation functor of XX is Def⁑X ⁣:Artkβ†’Set\operatorname{Def}_X \colon \mathrm{Art}_k \to \mathrm{Set}, sending AA to the set of isomorphism classes of deformations of XX over AA. A first-order deformation is a deformation over the dual numbers k[Ξ΅]=k[Ξ΅]/(Ξ΅2)k[\varepsilon] = k[\varepsilon]/(\varepsilon^2). Deformation theory is the study of Def⁑X\operatorname{Def}_X and of the analogous functors for other objects, such as sheaves, morphisms and subschemes.

Remarks

Let XX be smooth over kk with tangent sheaf TXT_X. Then Def⁑X(k[Ξ΅])β‰…H1(X,TX)\operatorname{Def}_X(k[\varepsilon]) \cong H^1(X, T_X), in sheaf cohomology. The obstructions to lifting a deformation over AA to a small extension of AA lie in H2(X,TX)H^2(X, T_X). Example: the trivial deformation XΓ—kSpec⁑AX \times_k \operatorname{Spec} A with the identity Ο•\phi satisfies both clauses, since a base change of Spec⁑Aβ†’Spec⁑k\operatorname{Spec} A \to \operatorname{Spec} k is flat. For X=β„™1X = \mathbb{P}^1, H1(β„™1,T)=H1(β„™1,π’ͺ(2))=0H^1(\mathbb{P}^1, T) = H^1(\mathbb{P}^1, \mathcal{O}(2)) = 0, so every first-order deformation of β„™1\mathbb{P}^1 is trivial. Non-example: let A=k[Ξ΅]A = k[\varepsilon] and 𝒳=Spec⁑k[Ξ΅,x]/(Ξ΅x)\mathcal{X} = \operatorname{Spec} k[\varepsilon, x]/(\varepsilon x). Its special fiber is Spec⁑k[x]=𝔸k1\operatorname{Spec} k[x] = \mathbb{A}^1_k, so clause 2 holds. But 𝒳\mathcal{X} is not flat over AA, since xx is killed by Ξ΅\varepsilon without being a multiple of Ξ΅\varepsilon, so clause 1 fails.
