Lifting idempotents

Builds on RingTwo-sided idealIdempotent element

Definition

Let RR be a ring and II a two-sided ideal of RR. An idempotent x+Ix + I of R/IR/I lifts to RR if there is e∈Re \in R with e2=ee^2 = e and e−x∈Ie - x \in I. Idempotents lift modulo II if every idempotent of R/IR/I lifts, that is, for every x∈Rx \in R with x2−x∈Ix^2 - x \in I there is e∈Re \in R with e2=ee^2 = e and e−x∈Ie - x \in I.

Remarks

Example: idempotents lift modulo I=4ℤ/8ℤI = 4\Z/8\Z in R=ℤ/8ℤR = \Z/8\Z. The idempotents of R/I≅ℤ/4ℤR/I \cong \Z/4\Z are 00 and 11, and they lift to the idempotents 00 and 11 of RR. Non-example: idempotents do not lift modulo 6ℤ6\Z in ℤ\Z. The class of 33 is idempotent in ℤ/6ℤ\Z/6\Z, since 9−3=69 - 3 = 6, but the idempotents of ℤ\Z are 00 and 11, and neither 3−03 - 0 nor 3−13 - 1 lies in 6ℤ6\Z. Idempotents lift modulo every nil ideal, and modulo every ideal of a ring that is complete with respect to the II-adic topology. A semilocal ring in which idempotents lift modulo the Jacobson radical is called semiperfect.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
