Levitzki radical
Builds on RingTwo-sided ideal
Definition
Let be a ring. A subset of is locally nilpotent if the following holds for every finite subset . There is an integer such that every product of elements of is . The Levitzki radical of is the sum of all locally nilpotent two-sided ideals of .
Remarks
The sum of all locally nilpotent ideals is again locally nilpotent, so is the largest locally nilpotent ideal of . Example: let be the ring of upper triangular matrices over a field and its strictly upper triangular matrices. is locally nilpotent since , and has no nonzero nilpotent elements, so . Non-example: in the set consists of nilpotent elements but is not locally nilpotent, since for all . Every nilpotent ideal is locally nilpotent and every locally nilpotent ideal is nil, which gives with the prime radical and the upper nilradical.
