Sum of ideals

Builds on Ideal

Summary

Let RR be a ring and let II and JJ be left ideals of RR. The sum of II and JJ is I+J={a+b:a∈I,b∈J}I + J = \{a + b : a \in I, b \in J\}. It is a left ideal, and it is the smallest left ideal that contains II and JJ.

Remarks

The sum I+JI + J is the ideal generated by I∪JI \cup J. In ℤ\mathbb{Z}, mℤ+nℤ=dℤm\mathbb{Z} + n\mathbb{Z} = d\mathbb{Z}, where dd is the greatest common divisor of mm and nn. The ideals II and JJ are coprime when I+J=RI + J = R.
