Definition

Let RR be a ring. RR is semiprime if, for every a∈Ra \in R, the condition aRa=0aRa = 0 implies a=0a = 0.

Remarks

Equivalent forms: RR has no nonzero nilpotent ideal; for every two-sided ideal II, I2=0I^2 = 0 implies I=0I = 0; the prime radical of RR is 00. Example: ℚ×ℚ\Q \times \Q is semiprime: if a=(a1,a2)a = (a_1, a_2) and aRa=0aRa = 0, then taking r=1r = 1 gives a12=a22=0a_1^2 = a_2^2 = 0, so a=0a = 0. Non-example: in the ring RR of upper triangular 2×22 \times 2 matrices over ℚ\Q, the matrix unit a=e12a = e_{12} is nonzero and e12Re12=0e_{12} R e_{12} = 0. Every prime ring is semiprime. A commutative ring is semiprime if and only if it is reduced.
