Superalgebra
Builds on Commutative ringModule over a ring
Definition
Let be a commutative ring. Let be a -module with a direct sum decomposition . Then with a -bilinear product is a superalgebra over if for all , with indices added modulo . Elements of are even, elements of are odd, and a nonzero element of is homogeneous of parity . Unless stated otherwise the product is associative with a unit.
Remarks
A superalgebra is supercommutative if for all homogeneous . Example: the exterior algebra of a vector space , with the sum of the even powers and the sum of the odd powers. The product maps into , and has the parity of the sum, so the condition holds; moreover is supercommutative. Example: the matrix ring , with the diagonal matrices and the off-diagonal ones, is a superalgebra that is not supercommutative. Non-example: with and fails the condition, since but . Equivalently, a superalgebra is a monoid object in the category of -graded modules, with the tensor product of graded modules.
