Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an associative algebra over with identity. Let be the opposite ring of . The algebra is an Azumaya algebra over if the following hold.
- is a finitely generated projective -module.
- is a faithful -module.
- The -linear map that sends to the map is an isomorphism.
Here is the tensor product of modules and is the endomorphism ring of the -module .
Remarks
Example: with . It is free of rank , hence projective and faithful, and the map sends the basis elements to the maps , which form a basis of . Non-example: let be a field extension of degree and over . Clauses 1 and 2 hold, but is commutative while is not, so the map in clause 3 is not an isomorphism. Over a field , the Azumaya algebras are exactly the central simple algebras over . Equivalently, is an Azumaya algebra when it is a central separable algebra over . Another equivalent form: clauses 1 and 2 hold and is central simple over for every maximal ideal of .
