Definition

Let XX be a smooth algebraic variety of dimension nn over a field. Let V,W⊂XV, W \subset X be irreducible closed subvarieties that meet properly: every irreducible component of V∩WV \cap W has dimension dim⁡V+dim⁡W−n\dim V + \dim W - n. Let ZZ be an irreducible component of V∩WV \cap W, and let A=𝒪X,ZA = \mathcal{O}_{X, Z} be the local ring of XX at the generic point of ZZ. Let IV,IW⊂AI_V, I_W \subset A be the ideals of VV and WW. The intersection multiplicity of VV and WW along ZZ is i(Z;V⋅W)=∑j≥0(−1)j ℓA(Tor⁡jA(A/IV,A/IW)),i(Z; V \cdot W) = \sum_{j \ge 0} (-1)^j \, \ell_A\big(\operatorname{Tor}_j^A(A/I_V, A/I_W)\big), where Tor⁡\operatorname{Tor} is the Tor functor and ℓA\ell_A is the length of an AA-module.

Remarks

The sum is finite because AA is a regular local ring, and each term has finite length because ZZ is a component of V∩WV \cap W. This is Serre's Tor formula, and i(Z;V⋅W)≥1i(Z; V \cdot W) \ge 1. When A/IVA/I_V and A/IWA/I_W are Cohen–Macaulay, the higher Tor terms vanish and i(Z;V⋅W)=ℓA(A/(IV+IW))i(Z; V \cdot W) = \ell_A\big(A/(I_V + I_W)\big). For two plane curves f=0f = 0 and g=0g = 0 without common component, meeting at a point PP, this gives iP(f,g)=dim⁡k𝒪𝔸2,P/(f,g)i_P(f, g) = \dim_k \mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{A}^2, P}/(f, g). Example: for f=y−x2f = y - x^2 and g=yg = y at P=(0,0)P = (0, 0), 𝒪𝔸2,P/(y−x2,y)≅k[x](x)/(x2)\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{A}^2, P}/(y - x^2, y) \cong k[x]_{(x)}/(x^2), of dimension 22. Non-example: if V=WV = W is a line in X=𝔸2X = \mathbb{A}^2, then V∩WV \cap W has dimension 11, not 1+1−2=01 + 1 - 2 = 0, so the intersection is not proper and the multiplicity is not defined.
