Definition

Let KK be a commutative ring and let AA be an associative algebra over KK with unit element 11. A subalgebra of AA is a subset B⊆AB \subseteq A such that:

  1. 1∈B1 \in B.
  2. If a,b∈Ba, b \in B, then a+b∈Ba + b \in B and ab∈Bab \in B.
  3. If k∈Kk \in K and b∈Bb \in B, then kb∈Bkb \in B.

Remarks

Clause 3 with k=−1k = -1 gives −b∈B-b \in B, so BB is a subring of AA and a submodule of the KK-module AA. With the operations of AA, the set BB is then a KK-algebra. Let η ⁣:K→A\eta \colon K \to A, k↦k1k \mapsto k1, be the structure map. A subset BB is a subalgebra exactly when it is a subring of AA that contains η(K)\eta(K), because kb=η(k)bkb = \eta(k)b.

Example: in the ℝ\R-algebra M2(ℝ)M_2(\R) of real 2×22 \times 2 matrices, the set of upper triangular matrices is a subalgebra. The identity matrix is upper triangular, and sums and real multiples of upper triangular matrices are upper triangular. For upper triangular PP and QQ, the (2,1)(2,1) entry of PQPQ is p21q11+p22q21=0p_{21} q_{11} + p_{22} q_{21} = 0, since p21=q21=0p_{21} = q_{21} = 0.

Non-example: in the ℝ\R-algebra ℝ[x]\R[x], the set ℤ[x]\Z[x] of polynomials with integer coefficients satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but not clause 3. For k=1/2k = 1/2 and b=1b = 1 the product kb=1/2kb = 1/2 is not in ℤ[x]\Z[x]. So ℤ[x]\Z[x] is a subring of ℝ[x]\R[x] but not an ℝ\R-subalgebra.

Some authors work with algebras without a unit element and drop clause 1. For a field KK, a subalgebra is a linear subspace of AA that contains 11 and is closed under multiplication.
