Group theory and generalizations Example
The symmetric group S3
Example
The symmetric group has the six elements , , , , and . It is isomorphic to the dihedral group of the symmetries of an equilateral triangle, when you number the vertices , , . The -cycles are the rotations, and the transpositions are the reflections. It is not abelian, because but . Thus is the smallest group that is not abelian. Its conjugacy classes are , the three transpositions, and the two -cycles. Its subgroups are , three subgroups of order , the alternating group of order , and . Only , and are normal.
