Dihedral group
Definition
Let be an integer. Let be a regular -gon in the plane with centre . The dihedral group is the group of all isometries of the plane that map onto itself, with composition as the operation. Let be the rotation by the angle about , and let be a reflection in a line of symmetry of the polygon.
Remarks
The elements of are the rotations and the reflections . The relations , and hold, and these relations give a presentation of . In abstract algebra, many authors write for this group, so the index is the order and not the number of sides. The group is not abelian, and it is a semidirect product of and .
