Group theory and generalizations Proof

Proof that the kernel is a normal subgroup

Builds on Kernel of a homomorphismNormal subgroupHomomorphisms preserve identity and inverses

Proof

  1. Let φ:G→H\varphi : G \to H be a group homomorphism, and let K=ker⁡φK = \ker \varphi be its kernel.
  2. φ(e)=e\varphi(e) = e and φ(b−1)=φ(b)−1\varphi(b^{-1}) = \varphi(b)^{-1}. Thus e∈Ke \in K, and KK is not empty.
  3. Let a,b∈Ka, b \in K. Then φ(ab−1)=φ(a)φ(b)−1=ee−1=e\varphi(ab^{-1}) = \varphi(a)\varphi(b)^{-1} = e e^{-1} = e, so ab−1∈Kab^{-1} \in K. Thus KK is a subgroup of GG.
  4. Let k∈Kk \in K and g∈Gg \in G. Then φ(gkg−1)=φ(g) e φ(g)−1=e\varphi(gkg^{-1}) = \varphi(g)\, e\, \varphi(g)^{-1} = e.
  5. Thus gKg−1⊆KgKg^{-1} \subseteq K for all g∈Gg \in G, and KK is a normal subgroup of GG.

Idea

A homomorphism sends the identity to the identity and respects inverses. Thus the elements sent to the identity are closed under the group operations and under conjugation.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 16 pages in order. The foundations come first. The path takes the proofs Proof of the uniqueness of inverses, Proof of the cancellation laws.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.
