Inverse element

Builds on Binary operationIdentity element

Definition

Let SS be a set with a binary operation ∗\ast and an identity element ee. Let a,b∈Sa, b \in S. The element bb is a left inverse of aa when b∗a=eb \ast a = e. The element bb is a right inverse of aa when a∗b=ea \ast b = e. The element bb is an inverse of aa (or two-sided inverse) when it is both a left inverse and a right inverse of aa. An element that has an inverse is called invertible.

Remarks

For addition on ℤ\mathbb{Z}, the inverse of aa is −a-a. For multiplication on ℚ\mathbb{Q}, each nonzero aa has the inverse 1/a1/a, and 00 has no inverse. When ∗\ast is associative, an element has at most one inverse.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
