Identity element

Builds on Binary operation

Definition

Let SS be a set and let ∗\ast be a binary operation on SS. An element e∈Se \in S is a left identity when e∗a=ae \ast a = a for all a∈Sa \in S. An element e∈Se \in S is a right identity when a∗e=aa \ast e = a for all a∈Sa \in S. An element e∈Se \in S is an identity element (or two-sided identity) when it is both a left identity and a right identity.

Remarks

The number 00 is the identity element for addition on ℤ\mathbb{Z}, and 11 is the identity element for multiplication. If ee is a left identity and ff is a right identity, then e=e∗f=fe = e \ast f = f. Thus an operation has at most one two-sided identity element.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 2 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
