Product of two subgroups

Builds on Subgroup

Definition

Let GG be a group and let HH and KK be subgroups of GG. The product of HH and KK is the subset HK={hk:h∈H,k∈K}HK = \{hk : h \in H, k \in K\} of GG.

Remarks

The set HKHK is a subgroup of GG if and only if HK=KHHK = KH. It need not be a subgroup. In the symmetric group S3S_3, two distinct subgroups of order 22 have a product with 44 elements, and 44 does not divide 66. When HKHK is a subgroup, it is the subgroup generated by H∪KH \cup K.
