Representation of a quiver
Builds on QuiverFieldVector spaceLinear map
Definition
Let be a field and let be a quiver. A representation of over consists of:
- a vector space over for each vertex ;
- a linear map for each arrow .
A morphism of representations is a family of linear maps , , such that for every arrow . If is finite and each is finite-dimensional, is finite-dimensional, and its dimension vector is .
Remarks
Example: for the quiver with arrow , the data and form a representation with dimension vector . Non-example: for the same quiver, a vector space at each vertex with a linear map is not a representation. Clause 2 asks for a map from the source of to its target. Direct sums are taken vertexwise, and a nonzero representation is indecomposable if it is not a direct sum of two nonzero representations. For a finite quiver, representations of correspond to left modules over the path algebra , and this is an equivalence of categories.
