Definition

Fix a signature and let AA be an algebra. The algebra AA is residually finite if the following holds for all a,b∈Aa, b \in A with a≠ba \ne b. There are a finite algebra FF of the same signature and a homomorphism f ⁣:A→Ff \colon A \to F with f(a)≠f(b)f(a) \ne f(b).

Remarks

Equivalently, AA is isomorphic to a subdirect product of finite algebras. Equivalently, the congruences of AA with finite quotient intersect to the trivial congruence. For groups, this is the definition of a residually finite group.

Example: the group (ℤ,+)(\Z, +) is residually finite. For a≠ba \ne b, let n=∣a−b∣+1n = \abs{a - b} + 1; the reduction map ℤ→ℤ/nℤ\Z \to \Z/n\Z sends aa and bb to different classes, since nn does not divide a−ba - b.

Non-example: the group (ℚ,+)(\Q, +) is not residually finite. A homomorphic image of ℚ\Q is divisible, and a finite divisible abelian group is trivial, since multiplication by its order is both zero and onto. So every homomorphism from ℚ\Q to a finite group sends 00 and 11 to the same element.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
