Restriction of an endomorphism to an invariant subspace

Builds on Invariant subspace

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let T ⁣:V→VT \colon V \to V be an endomorphism. Let WW be a TT-invariant subspace of VV. The restriction of TT to WW is the endomorphism T∣W ⁣:W→W,T∣W(w)=T(w).T|_W \colon W \to W, \qquad T|_W(w) = T(w).

Remarks

The map is well defined because T(W)⊆WT(W) \subseteq W, and it is linear. If VV is finite-dimensional, then the characteristic polynomial of T∣WT|_W divides that of TT. Take a basis of VV that extends a basis of WW. In this basis, the matrix of TT is block upper triangular, and its first diagonal block is the matrix of T∣WT|_W.
