Definition
Let be a smooth manifold and let be an interval. A Ricci flow on is a family of Riemannian metrics on with these properties. The metric depends smoothly on , and where is the Ricci curvature tensor of .
Remarks
Example: let be the round metric of the unit sphere with , so . Let for . The Ricci tensor does not change when the metric is multiplied by a positive constant, so . Thus , and is a Ricci flow that shrinks the sphere to a point at . Non-example: has , which has the wrong sign. A flat metric, such as that of a flat torus, gives a constant Ricci flow . In local coordinates the equation reads .
