Riemann solver
Builds on Hyperbolic conservation lawRiemann problemEntropy solution
Definition
Let be open and let be the flux of a hyperbolic conservation law . A Riemann solver for is a map . Its value is the numerical flux at an interface between a left state and a right state . It is obtained from an exact or approximate solution of the Riemann problem with data . It is required to be:
- consistent: for all ;
- locally Lipschitz continuous in both arguments.
The exact Riemann solver is , where is the self-similar entropy solution of the Riemann problem, when it exists and is unique.
Remarks
Example: the HLL solver uses two estimates of the slowest and fastest wave speeds. It sets if , if , and otherwise For every case gives , so this solver is consistent.
Non-example: fails clause 1, since . A scheme with such a flux approximates the wrong equation.
For the scalar equation , the exact solver gives if and if , which is the upwind flux.
