Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and 0<α<n0 < \alpha < n. Let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function and let cα=πn/2 2α Γ(α/2)Γ((n−α)/2).c_\alpha = \pi^{n/2} \, 2^\alpha \, \frac{\Gamma(\alpha/2)}{\Gamma((n - \alpha)/2)}. For a measurable function ff on ℝn\R^n, the Riesz potential of order α\alpha of ff is Iαf(x)=1cα∫ℝnf(y)∣x−y∣n−α dy,I_\alpha f(x) = \frac{1}{c_\alpha} \int_{\R^n} \frac{f(y)}{\abs{x - y}^{n - \alpha}} \, dy, at each x∈ℝnx \in \R^n where the integral converges absolutely.

Remarks

So IαfI_\alpha f is the convolution of ff with the kernel ∣x∣α−n/cα\abs{x}^{\alpha - n} / c_\alpha. If f∈Lp(ℝn)f \in L^p(\R^n) with 1≤p<n/α1 \le p < n/\alpha, the integral converges absolutely for almost every xx. With the Fourier transform f^(ξ)=∫f(x)e−2πix⋅ξ dx\hat f(\xi) = \int f(x) e^{-2\pi i x \cdot \xi} \, dx, the constant cαc_\alpha is chosen so that Iαf^(ξ)=(2π∣ξ∣)−αf^(ξ)\widehat{I_\alpha f}(\xi) = (2\pi \abs{\xi})^{-\alpha} \hat f(\xi) for Schwartz functions ff, that is, Iα=(−Δ)−α/2I_\alpha = (-\Delta)^{-\alpha/2}. The semigroup law IαIβ=Iα+βI_\alpha I_\beta = I_{\alpha + \beta} holds for α+β<n\alpha + \beta < n.

Example: for n≥3n \ge 3 and α=2\alpha = 2, one has c2=4πn/2/Γ(n/2−1)=(n−2)σn−1c_2 = 4 \pi^{n/2} / \Gamma(n/2 - 1) = (n - 2) \sigma_{n-1}, where σn−1=2πn/2/Γ(n/2)\sigma_{n-1} = 2 \pi^{n/2} / \Gamma(n/2) is the area of the unit sphere. Indeed Γ(n/2)=(n/2−1)Γ(n/2−1)\Gamma(n/2) = (n/2 - 1) \Gamma(n/2 - 1), so (n−2)⋅2πn/2/Γ(n/2)=4πn/2/Γ(n/2−1)(n - 2) \cdot 2 \pi^{n/2} / \Gamma(n/2) = 4 \pi^{n/2} / \Gamma(n/2 - 1). So I2f(x)=1(n−2)σn−1∫f(y)∣x−y∣2−n dyI_2 f(x) = \frac{1}{(n-2) \sigma_{n-1}} \int f(y) \abs{x - y}^{2-n} \, dy, and −ΔI2f=f-\Delta I_2 f = f for smooth ff with compact support.

Non-example: the constant function f=1f = 1 has no Riesz potential. For every xx the integral ∫∣x−y∣α−n dy\int \abs{x - y}^{\alpha - n} \, dy diverges, since ∣y∣α−n\abs{y}^{\alpha - n} is not integrable at infinity when α>0\alpha > 0.
