Definition
Let be a statistical model for an observation with values in a measurable space . Let be a measurable space of actions and let be a loss function, measurable in for each . A (non-randomized) decision rule is a measurable map . The risk function of is the map given by
Remarks
The risk is an expected value over the data, for a fixed . Under the squared error loss , the risk of an estimator is its mean squared error. For randomized rules, one also averages over the randomization.
Example: let be independent normal with mean and variance , with squared error loss. For , the risk is for every .
Non-example: the realized loss at the observed data is not the risk. It depends on the data, while the risk is an average over all possible data.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
