Definition

Let q,β∈ℂq, \beta \in \C with ∣q∣<1\abs{q} < 1 and ∣β∣<1\abs{\beta} < 1, and let x=cos⁡θx = \cos\theta. The Rogers polynomials Cn(x;β∣q)C_n(x; \beta \mid q), n≥0n \ge 0, are the coefficients of the power series in tt ∑n=0∞Cn(x;β∣q) tn=(βteiθ;q)∞ (βte−iθ;q)∞(teiθ;q)∞ (te−iθ;q)∞,∣t∣<1,\sum_{n=0}^{\infty} C_n(x; \beta \mid q)\, t^n = \frac{(\beta t e^{i\theta}; q)_\infty\, (\beta t e^{-i\theta}; q)_\infty}{(t e^{i\theta}; q)_\infty\, (t e^{-i\theta}; q)_\infty}, \qquad \abs{t} < 1, where (⋅ ;q)∞(\cdot\,; q)_\infty is the infinite q-Pochhammer symbol.

Remarks

Expanding each factor by the qq-binomial theorem gives the explicit form Cn(x;β∣q)=∑k=0n(β;q)k (β;q)n−k(q;q)k (q;q)n−k ei(n−2k)θ.C_n(x; \beta \mid q) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \frac{(\beta; q)_k\, (\beta; q)_{n-k}}{(q; q)_k\, (q; q)_{n-k}}\, e^{i(n - 2k)\theta}. The terms for kk and n−kn - k pair to 2cos⁡((n−2k)θ)2\cos((n - 2k)\theta) times the same coefficient. So CnC_n is a polynomial in xx of degree nn, with leading coefficient 2n(β;q)n(q;q)n≠02^n \frac{(\beta; q)_n}{(q; q)_n} \ne 0.

Example: β=q\beta = q. Then (q;q)k(q;q)n−k(q;q)k(q;q)n−k=1\frac{(q; q)_k (q; q)_{n-k}}{(q; q)_k (q; q)_{n-k}} = 1, so Cn(x;q∣q)=∑k=0nei(n−2k)θ=sin⁡((n+1)θ)sin⁡θC_n(x; q \mid q) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} e^{i(n-2k)\theta} = \frac{\sin((n+1)\theta)}{\sin\theta}, the Chebyshev polynomial Un(x)U_n(x) of the second kind.

Non-example: β=1\beta = 1 fails the condition ∣β∣<1\abs{\beta} < 1. There the right side of the generating function is 11, so all coefficients of tnt^n with n≥1n \ge 1 vanish, and there is no polynomial of degree nn.

For β=0\beta = 0, Cn(x;0∣q)=Hn(x∣q)(q;q)nC_n(x; 0 \mid q) = \frac{H_n(x \mid q)}{(q; q)_n}, with the continuous q-Hermite polynomials. For 0<q<10 < q < 1 and −1<β<1-1 < \beta < 1, the CnC_n are orthogonal on [−1,1][-1, 1] for the weight (e2iθ,e−2iθ;q)∞(βe2iθ,βe−2iθ;q)∞\frac{(e^{2i\theta}, e^{-2i\theta}; q)_\infty}{(\beta e^{2i\theta}, \beta e^{-2i\theta}; q)_\infty} with respect to dθd\theta, x=cos⁡θx = \cos\theta. As q→1q \to 1, Cn(x;qλ∣q)→Cn(λ)(x)C_n(x; q^\lambda \mid q) \to C_n^{(\lambda)}(x), the Gegenbauer polynomial.
