Counterexample
Let be the unit sphere. Its standard CR structure is spanned by the vector field which is tangent to , and its conjugate is . For a real number with , let , and let be with the CR structure spanned by . Then is a compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold of real dimension . Every CR function on , that is every with , is even: for all . So CR functions cannot separate the antipodal points and , and there is no CR embedding of into any .
Remarks
The parity follows by expanding in spherical harmonics of bidegree in . Both and preserve the total degree . So the equation splits into one equation for each total degree. For odd total degree this equation has only the zero solution. For the structure is the standard one, and the coordinate functions embed it. So arbitrarily small deformations destroy embeddability in dimension . This shows that the dimension hypothesis in Boutet de Monvel's embedding theorem cannot be dropped.
