Rotation number
Builds on CircleHomeomorphism
Definition
Let be the circle, with projection , and let be an orientation-preserving homeomorphism. A lift of is a continuous map with . Every such lift is increasing and satisfies , and two lifts differ by an integer constant. The translation number of a lift is the limit where is the -th iterate of . The limit exists and does not depend on . The rotation number of is , which does not depend on the choice of lift .
Remarks
Example: the rotation of has the lift , and . So , and is the fractional part of .
Non-example: the doubling map of is not a homeomorphism. Its lift satisfies , and has no finite limit for , so no rotation number is defined.
The rotation number is invariant under conjugacy: if is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of , then . It depends continuously on in the uniform topology. The fractional part is often left out, and is viewed as an element of .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
