Round-off error
Definition
Let be a set of floating-point numbers and let be a rounding. The round-off error of representing is , and for its relative round-off error is . Let an algorithm compute in exact real arithmetic, and let it return when each operation is done in floating-point arithmetic. Then the round-off error of the computation is .
Remarks
Example: with base , precision and rounding to nearest, , so the round-off error is and the relative round-off error is . This is within the unit roundoff of the system. Non-example: replacing by in exact arithmetic gives an error, but it is a truncation error, not a round-off error. If lies in the range of normalized numbers and rounds to nearest, then , where is the unit roundoff, see machine epsilon.
