Definition

Let D⊆ℂnD \subseteq \C^n be an open set. Then DD is a Runge domain if the following holds for every holomorphic function ff on DD. For every compact set K⊆DK \subseteq D and every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is a polynomial pp in z1,…,znz_1, \dots, z_n with ∣f(z)−p(z)∣<ε\abs{f(z) - p(z)} < \varepsilon for all z∈Kz \in K.

Equivalently, the polynomials are dense in the space of holomorphic functions on DD for the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets.

Remarks

Example: the unit polydisc Δn\Delta^n. Every holomorphic ff on Δn\Delta^n is the sum of its Taylor series at 00, and this series converges uniformly on each compact subset of Δn\Delta^n; its partial sums are polynomials. More generally every convex open set is a Runge domain, by the Oka–Weil theorem applied to the convex hull of KK, which is compact and polynomially convex.

Non-example: D={z∈ℂn:1<∣z1∣<2}D = \set{z \in \C^n : 1 < \abs{z_1} < 2} and f(z)=1/z1f(z) = 1/z_1. On the compact circle K={∣z1∣=3/2, z2=⋯=zn=0}K = \set{\abs{z_1} = 3/2, \ z_2 = \cdots = z_n = 0}, every polynomial pp satisfies ∫∣ζ∣=3/2p(ζ,0,…,0) dζ=0\int_{\abs{\zeta} = 3/2} p(\zeta, 0, \dots, 0) \, d\zeta = 0, while the same integral of ff is 2πi2\pi i. So ff is not a uniform limit of polynomials on KK.

For n=1n = 1, Runge's theorem gives a complete answer. An open set D⊆ℂD \subseteq \C is a Runge domain exactly when every connected component of DD is simply connected.
