Definition

Let P⊂ℝdP \subset \R^d be a convex polytope of dimension d≥2d \ge 2, and let FF be a facet of PP. For each facet GG, let HGH_G be the hyperplane spanned by GG. Choose a point p∈ℝdp \in \R^d such that:

  1. pp and PP lie on opposite sides of HFH_F, strictly;
  2. for every facet G≠FG \ne F, pp lies strictly on the same side of HGH_G as the interior of PP.

For x∈Px \in P, let π(x)\pi(x) be the point where the segment from pp to xx meets HFH_F. The Schlegel diagram of PP based at FF is the collection of the sets π(G′)\pi(G'). Here G′G' runs over the faces of PP other than PP and FF.

Remarks

Each π(G′)\pi(G') is a convex polytope contained in FF, of the same dimension as G′G'. These polytopes cover FF, two of them meet in a common face, and their inclusions are those of the faces of PP. So the diagram is a polytopal subdivision of FF that records the whole face lattice of PP. Points pp as in the definition exist; any point beyond FF close enough to an interior point of FF works.

Example: let P=[0,1]3P = [0,1]^3, FF the facet x3=1x_3 = 1, and p=(12,12,1+ϵ)p = (\tfrac12, \tfrac12, 1 + \epsilon) with ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 small. Then pp is above x3=1x_3 = 1, and on the inner side of the four side planes and of x3=0x_3 = 0. The bottom square projects to a smaller square in the middle of FF, and the four side squares project to trapezoids between the two squares.

Non-example: in the same example, p=(5,12,2)p = (5, \tfrac12, 2) satisfies condition 1 but fails condition 2 for the facet x1=1x_1 = 1, since pp has x1>1x_1 > 1. Then the images are not even inside FF: the segment from pp to the vertex (1,0,0)(1, 0, 0) meets the plane x3=1x_3 = 1 at (3,14,1)∉F(3, \tfrac14, 1) \notin F.
