Definition

Let kk be a field, let 1≤d<n1 \le d < n, and let Gr(d,n)\mathrm{Gr}(d, n) be the Grassmannian of dd-dimensional subspaces of knk^n. Fix a full flag F1⊂F2⊂⋯⊂Fn=knF_1 \subset F_2 \subset \cdots \subset F_n = k^n with dim⁡Fj=j\dim F_j = j. Let λ=(λ1,…,λd)\lambda = (\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_d) be a partition with n−d≥λ1≥⋯≥λd≥0n - d \ge \lambda_1 \ge \cdots \ge \lambda_d \ge 0. The Schubert variety XλX_\lambda is Xλ={Λ∈Gr(d,n):dim⁡(Λ∩Fn−d+i−λi)≥i for i=1,…,d}.X_\lambda = \set{\Lambda \in \mathrm{Gr}(d, n) : \dim(\Lambda \cap F_{n - d + i - \lambda_i}) \ge i \text{ for } i = 1, \ldots, d}.

Remarks

XλX_\lambda is a closed irreducible subvariety of codimension ∣λ∣=λ1+⋯+λd\abs{\lambda} = \lambda_1 + \cdots + \lambda_d.

Example: λ=0\lambda = 0 gives all of Gr(d,n)\mathrm{Gr}(d, n). Indeed dim⁡(Λ∩Fn−d+i)≥d+(n−d+i)−n=i\dim(\Lambda \cap F_{n - d + i}) \ge d + (n - d + i) - n = i holds for every Λ\Lambda. For d=2d = 2, n=4n = 4 and λ=(1,0)\lambda = (1, 0), the conditions reduce to dim⁡(Λ∩F2)≥1\dim(\Lambda \cap F_2) \ge 1. In projective terms these are the lines in ℙ3\mathbb{P}^3 that meet a fixed line, a hypersurface in Gr(2,4)\mathrm{Gr}(2, 4).

Non-example: the set of Λ∈Gr(2,4)\Lambda \in \mathrm{Gr}(2, 4) with Λ∩F2=0\Lambda \cap F_2 = 0 is open and dense, and it is not closed. So it is not a Schubert variety; it is the open Schubert cell.

General form: let GG be a connected reductive group with a Borel subgroup BB and a parabolic subgroup P⊇BP \supseteq B. A Schubert variety in the flag variety G/PG / P is the Zariski closure of a BB-orbit.
