Scorer's function

Builds on Airy functionAiry equation

Definition

For real xx, Scorer's functions are Gi⁡(x)=1π∫0∞sin⁡(t33+xt)dt,Hi⁡(x)=1π∫0∞exp⁡(−t33+xt)dt,\operatorname{Gi}(x) = \frac{1}{\pi} \int_0^\infty \sin\left( \frac{t^3}{3} + x t \right) dt, \qquad \operatorname{Hi}(x) = \frac{1}{\pi} \int_0^\infty \exp\left( -\frac{t^3}{3} + x t \right) dt, where the first integral is an improper Riemann integral.

Remarks

They solve the inhomogeneous Airy equations Gi⁡′′−xGi⁡=−1π\operatorname{Gi}'' - x \operatorname{Gi} = -\frac{1}{\pi} and Hi⁡′′−xHi⁡=1π\operatorname{Hi}'' - x \operatorname{Hi} = \frac{1}{\pi}. Check for Hi⁡\operatorname{Hi}: differentiating under the integral sign, Hi⁡′′−xHi⁡=1π∫0∞(t2−x) e−t3/3+xt dt=−1π[e−t3/3+xt]0∞=1π\operatorname{Hi}'' - x \operatorname{Hi} = \frac{1}{\pi} \int_0^\infty (t^2 - x)\, e^{-t^3/3 + xt}\, dt = -\frac{1}{\pi} \left[ e^{-t^3/3 + xt} \right]_0^\infty = \frac{1}{\pi}. By comparing with the integral that defines the Airy function Bi⁡\operatorname{Bi}, one has Gi⁡+Hi⁡=Bi⁡\operatorname{Gi} + \operatorname{Hi} = \operatorname{Bi}. A non-example: Bi⁡\operatorname{Bi} itself is not a Scorer function; it solves the homogeneous equation y′′−xy=0y'' - x y = 0, not one with right-hand side ±1π\pm \frac{1}{\pi}. Both functions extend to entire functions of z∈ℂz \in \C.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
