Second variation

Summary

The second variation of a functional at a function y0y_0 is the second derivative of ε↦J(y0+εh)\varepsilon \mapsto J(y_0 + \varepsilon h) at ε=0\varepsilon = 0. It plays the role of the second derivative test of ordinary calculus. At a minimiser the first variation vanishes and the second variation is nonnegative in every direction hh. For integral functionals it is a quadratic functional in hh, and its study leads to the Legendre condition, the Jacobi equation and conjugate points.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
