Definition

Let XX be a real vector space, let U⊆XU \subseteq X, and let J ⁣:U→ℝJ \colon U \to \R be a functional. Let y0∈Uy_0 \in U and h∈Xh \in X be such that y0+εh∈Uy_0 + \varepsilon h \in U for all small ∣ε∣\abs{\varepsilon}. The second variation of JJ at y0y_0 in the direction hh is δ2J(y0)[h]=d2dε2J(y0+εh)∣ε=0,\delta^2 J(y_0)[h] = \frac{d^2}{d\varepsilon^2} J(y_0 + \varepsilon h) \Big|_{\varepsilon = 0}, when this derivative exists.

Let J(y)=∫abL(x,y,y′) dxJ(y) = \int_a^b L(x, y, y') \, dx be an integral functional with L(x,y,p)L(x, y, p) of class C2C^2. For y0,h∈C1([a,b])y_0, h \in C^1([a, b]) the second variation is δ2J(y0)[h]=∫ab(Lpp h′2+2Lyp hh′+Lyy h2) dx,\delta^2 J(y_0)[h] = \int_a^b \big( L_{pp} \, h'^2 + 2 L_{yp} \, h h' + L_{yy} \, h^2 \big) \, dx, where the second partial derivatives of LL are taken at (x,y0(x),y0′(x))(x, y_0(x), y_0'(x)).

Remarks

Some books put a factor 12\frac{1}{2} in front, so that J(y0+εh)=J(y0)+ε δJ(y0)[h]+ε2 δ2J(y0)[h]+o(ε2)J(y_0 + \varepsilon h) = J(y_0) + \varepsilon \, \delta J(y_0)[h] + \varepsilon^2 \, \delta^2 J(y_0)[h] + o(\varepsilon^2), where δJ\delta J is the first variation.

Example: let J(y)=∫0π(y′2−y2) dxJ(y) = \int_0^\pi (y'^2 - y^2) \, dx and y0=0y_0 = 0. Then J(εh)=ε2∫0π(h′2−h2) dxJ(\varepsilon h) = \varepsilon^2 \int_0^\pi (h'^2 - h^2) \, dx, so δ2J(0)[h]=2∫0π(h′2−h2) dx\delta^2 J(0)[h] = 2 \int_0^\pi (h'^2 - h^2) \, dx. This agrees with the formula, since Lpp=2L_{pp} = 2, Lyp=0L_{yp} = 0 and Lyy=−2L_{yy} = -2.

Non-example: let J(y)=∫01∣y′∣ dxJ(y) = \int_0^1 \abs{y'} \, dx on C1([0,1])C^1([0, 1]) and y0=0y_0 = 0. Then J(εh)=∣ε∣∫01∣h′∣ dxJ(\varepsilon h) = \abs{\varepsilon} \int_0^1 \abs{h'} \, dx, which is not differentiable at ε=0\varepsilon = 0 when hh is not constant. So the second variation at 00 does not exist in such a direction hh; the integrand ∣p∣\abs{p} is not of class C2C^2.

If h(a)=h(b)=0h(a) = h(b) = 0 and x↦Lyp(x,y0(x),y0′(x))x \mapsto L_{yp}(x, y_0(x), y_0'(x)) is C1C^1, an integration by parts gives δ2J(y0)[h]=∫ab(Ph′2+Qh2) dx\delta^2 J(y_0)[h] = \int_a^b \big( P h'^2 + Q h^2 \big) \, dx with P=LppP = L_{pp} and Q=Lyy−ddxLypQ = L_{yy} - \frac{d}{dx} L_{yp}.
