Definition

Let MM be a real analytic manifold, for example an open subset of ℝn\R^n. A subset X⊆MX \subseteq M is semianalytic if every point p∈Mp \in M has an open neighbourhood UU with the following property. The set X∩UX \cap U is a finite union of sets of the form {x∈U:f(x)=0, g1(x)>0,…,gr(x)>0},\set{x \in U : f(x) = 0,\ g_1(x) > 0, \dots, g_r(x) > 0}, where r≥0r \ge 0 and f,g1,…,grf, g_1, \dots, g_r are real analytic functions on UU.

Remarks

The condition is required at every point of MM, not only at points of XX. Equivalently, X∩UX \cap U belongs to the smallest family of subsets of UU that contains the sets {g>0}\set{g > 0} for real analytic gg on UU. Here the family is required to be closed under finite unions, finite intersections and complements. Several equations f1=⋯=fs=0f_1 = \cdots = f_s = 0 can be merged into the single equation f12+⋯+fs2=0f_1^2 + \cdots + f_s^2 = 0, and f=0f = 0 gives no equation at all. Example: X={(x,y)∈ℝ2:y>0, x2+y2<1}X = \set{(x, y) \in \R^2 : y > 0,\ x^2 + y^2 < 1} is semianalytic, with U=ℝ2U = \R^2, f=0f = 0, g1=yg_1 = y and g2=1−x2−y2g_2 = 1 - x^2 - y^2. Non-example: X={0}∪{1/n:n≥1}X = \set{0} \cup \set{1/n : n \ge 1} is not semianalytic in ℝ\R. Let UU be any open interval about 00, and f,gif, g_i real analytic on UU. If ff vanishes at infinitely many of the points 1/n1/n, then f=0f = 0 on UU by the identity theorem; otherwise {f=0}\set{f = 0} is finite near 00. So each set {f=0,gi>0}\set{f = 0, g_i > 0} is, near 00, either finite or a union of finitely many open intervals, and a finite union of such sets cannot equal XX near 00. Every semialgebraic subset of ℝn\R^n and every real analytic subset of MM is semianalytic.
