Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and J=J(R)J = J(R) its Jacobson radical. RR is semiprimary if the following hold.

  1. RR is semilocal, that is, R/JR/J is a semisimple ring.
  2. JJ is a nilpotent ideal: Jn=0J^n = 0 for some integer n≥1n \ge 1.

Remarks

Example: the ring RR of upper triangular 2×22 \times 2 matrices over a field kk is semiprimary: JJ is the set of strictly upper triangular matrices, J2=0J^2 = 0, and R/J≅k×kR/J \cong k \times k is semisimple. Non-example: ℤ(p)\Z_{(p)} satisfies clause 1, since ℤ(p)/pℤ(p)≅𝔽p\Z_{(p)}/p\Z_{(p)} \cong \mathbb{F}_p, but not clause 2, since pn≠0p^n \ne 0 for every nn. Every left Artinian ring is semiprimary, and a semiprimary ring is left Artinian if and only if it is left Noetherian. The definition is left-right symmetric.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
