Sheaf of modules
Definition
Let be a ringed space. A sheaf of -modules is a sheaf of abelian groups on with the following data and condition.
- For each open set , is a module over the ring .
- For open sets , all and all , one has .
A morphism of -modules is a morphism of sheaves such that each is -linear.
Remarks
The structure sheaf is a sheaf of -modules, with each acting on itself by multiplication. Condition 2 holds because restriction maps of are ring homomorphisms. On , the constant sheaf admits no structure of -module. Its sections over form the group , and clause 1 would need a module structure over . This is impossible, since multiplication by is not invertible on . For each point , the stalk is a module over the local ring . The -modules form an abelian category, with tensor products and sheaves of homomorphisms.
