Definition

Let (๐’ž,J)(\mathcal{C}, J) be a site and let Pโ€‰โฃ:๐’žopโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญP \colon \mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}} \to \mathbf{Set} be a presheaf. For xโˆˆP(c)x \in P(c) and fโ€‰โฃ:dโ†’cf \colon d \to c, write xโˆฃf=P(f)(x)x|_f = P(f)(x). Let SS be a sieve on cc. A matching family for SS is a choice of an element xfโˆˆP(d)x_f \in P(d) for each fโ€‰โฃ:dโ†’cf \colon d \to c in SS such that xfโˆ˜g=xfโˆฃgx_{f \circ g} = x_f|_g for every morphism gโ€‰โฃ:eโ†’dg \colon e \to d. An amalgamation of the family is an element xโˆˆP(c)x \in P(c) with xโˆฃf=xfx|_f = x_f for every fโˆˆSf \in S. The presheaf PP is a sheaf for JJ when the following holds. For every object cc and every covering sieve SโˆˆJ(c)S \in J(c), each matching family for SS has exactly one amalgamation.

Remarks

Equivalently, PP is a sheaf when, for every covering sieve SโІHomโก(โˆ’,c)S \subseteq \Hom(-, c), every natural transformation Sโ†’PS \to P extends uniquely to Homโก(โˆ’,c)โ†’P\Hom(-, c) \to P. A morphism of sheaves is a natural transformation; sheaves on (๐’ž,J)(\mathcal{C}, J) form a full subcategory Sh(๐’ž,J)\mathrm{Sh}(\mathcal{C}, J) of presheaves. Example: on the site of open sets of a space XX, the presheaf P(U)=C(U,โ„)P(U) = C(U, \R) of continuous functions is a sheaf. Functions on the members of a covering sieve that agree on overlaps define one function on UU, which is continuous because continuity is local. Non-example: on the same site, the constant presheaf P(U)={0,1}P(U) = \set{0, 1} fails, because the empty cover of U=โˆ…U = \emptyset has a unique (empty) matching family but two amalgamations. For this site the definition gives back the sheaves on a topological space.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
