Sheafification
Definition
Let be a small site and let be a presheaf of sets on . A sheafification of is a sheaf for together with a morphism of presheaves with this property. For every sheaf and every morphism , there is exactly one morphism of sheaves with .
Remarks
A sheafification exists for every presheaf on a small site and is unique up to unique isomorphism. So is a functor , left adjoint to the inclusion, and it preserves finite limits. One construction is , where is the colimit over covering sieves of the sets of matching families for . If is already a sheaf, then is an isomorphism. Example: on the site of open sets of a space , the sheafification of the constant presheaf is the sheaf of locally constant functions . Non-example: let . The constant presheaf itself, with , is not a sheafification, since it is not a sheaf. Indeed, the empty sieve covers , and its unique (empty) matching family has two amalgamations in . The sheafification repairs this: the sheaf of locally constant functions has exactly one section over .
