Definition

Let ๐’œ\mathcal{A} be a finite set, the alphabet, with the discrete topology, and give ๐’œโ„ค\mathcal{A}^{\Z} the product topology. The shift map ฯƒโ€‰โฃ:๐’œโ„คโ†’๐’œโ„ค\sigma \colon \mathcal{A}^{\Z} \to \mathcal{A}^{\Z} is ฯƒ(x)i=xi+1\sigma(x)_i = x_{i+1} for x=(xi)iโˆˆโ„คx = (x_i)_{i \in \Z}. A shift space (or subshift) over ๐’œ\mathcal{A} is a subset XโІ๐’œโ„คX \subseteq \mathcal{A}^{\Z} such that:

  1. XX is closed in ๐’œโ„ค\mathcal{A}^{\Z}.
  2. ฯƒ(X)=X\sigma(X) = X.

Remarks

The space ๐’œโ„ค\mathcal{A}^{\Z} is compact, with the metric d(x,y)=2โˆ’minโก{โˆฃiโˆฃ:xiโ‰ yi}d(x, y) = 2^{-\min\set{\abs{i} : x_i \neq y_i}} for xโ‰ yx \neq y, and ฯƒ\sigma is a homeomorphism; so ฯƒ\sigma restricts to a homeomorphism of each shift space. The whole space ๐’œโ„ค\mathcal{A}^{\Z} is the full shift. Equivalent form: XX is a shift space if and only if it is defined by a set โ„ฑ\mathcal{F} of forbidden words. Here โ„ฑ\mathcal{F} is a set of finite words, elements of the free monoid on ๐’œ\mathcal{A}. Then XX is the set of sequences in which no word of โ„ฑ\mathcal{F} occurs as a block of consecutive symbols. One-sided shift spaces are defined in the same way in ๐’œโ„•\mathcal{A}^{\N}, with ฯƒ(X)โІX\sigma(X) \subseteq X. Example: the golden mean shift XโІ{0,1}โ„คX \subseteq \set{0, 1}^{\Z}, the sequences with no block 1111. A limit of such sequences has no block 1111, since a block 1111 at positions i,i+1i, i+1 would appear in the sequences close to it. So XX is closed, and shifting does not create or remove blocks, so ฯƒ(X)=X\sigma(X) = X. Non-example: the set of sequences in {0,1}โ„ค\set{0, 1}^{\Z} with exactly one symbol 11 satisfies clause 2, but not clause 1. Its elements with the 11 at position nn tend to the all-00 sequence as nโ†’โˆžn \to \infty, which is not in the set.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
