Definition
Let be a rational function of degree at least . A Siegel disc of is a component of the Fatou set of with the following properties.
- There is with .
- There is a conformal map onto the unit disc .
- There is an irrational number with for all .
Remarks
The point is a periodic point of , and its multiplier is . So the periodic point is neutral and irrationally indifferent, and the map is linearizable near it. Example: Siegel proved in 1942 that is linearizable at when is Diophantine, for instance the golden mean . The component of the Fatou set containing is then a Siegel disc. Non-example: the unit disc for fails clause 3, since is not injective there, while a rotation is. The analogous domain with an annulus in place of the disc is a Herman ring.
