Problem

Let Ω⊆ℝ3\Omega \subseteq \R^3 be a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary, the reference shape of a linearly elastic body. Split the boundary into disjoint parts ΓD\Gamma_D, ΓN\Gamma_N and ΓC\Gamma_C, with ΓD\Gamma_D of positive surface measure, and let nn be the outward unit normal. For a displacement u ⁣:Ω→ℝ3u \colon \Omega \to \R^3 let ε(u)=12(∇u+∇uT)\varepsilon(u) = \tfrac12 (\nabla u + \nabla u^T) be the strain and σ(u)=𝒞ε(u)\sigma(u) = \mathcal{C} \varepsilon(u) the stress. Here 𝒞\mathcal{C} is a bounded elasticity tensor with the usual symmetries that is uniformly positive definite on symmetric matrices. Let ff be a body force and gg a surface force on ΓN\Gamma_N. Write un=u⋅nu_n = u \cdot n, σn=(σ(u)n)⋅n\sigma_n = (\sigma(u) n) \cdot n and σT=σ(u)n−σnn\sigma_T = \sigma(u) n - \sigma_n n. Find uu such that:

  1. −div⁡σ(u)=f-\operatorname{div} \sigma(u) = f in Ω\Omega;
  2. u=0u = 0 on ΓD\Gamma_D;
  3. σ(u)n=g\sigma(u) n = g on ΓN\Gamma_N;
  4. on ΓC\Gamma_C: un≤0u_n \le 0, σn≤0\sigma_n \le 0, σnun=0\sigma_n u_n = 0 and σT=0\sigma_T = 0.

Clause 4 describes frictionless contact with a rigid support. The body cannot enter the support, the support can only push, and it pushes only where there is contact.

Remarks

The difficulty is that it is not known in advance where on ΓC\Gamma_C the body touches the support, so the boundary condition there is ambiguous. The weak form is a variational inequality. Let V={v∈H1(Ω;ℝ3):v=0 on ΓD}V = \set{v \in H^1(\Omega; \R^3) : v = 0 \text{ on } \Gamma_D}, using the Sobolev space H1H^1, and K={v∈V:v⋅n≤0 on ΓC}K = \set{v \in V : v \cdot n \le 0 \text{ on } \Gamma_C}. Let a(u,v)=∫Ωσ(u):ε(v) dxa(u, v) = \int_\Omega \sigma(u) : \varepsilon(v) \, dx and ℓ(v)=∫Ωf⋅v dx+∫ΓNg⋅v dS\ell(v) = \int_\Omega f \cdot v \, dx + \int_{\Gamma_N} g \cdot v \, dS. Find u∈Ku \in K with a(u,v−u)≥ℓ(v−u)a(u, v - u) \ge \ell(v - u) for all v∈Kv \in K. The set KK is closed and convex, and Korn's inequality makes aa coercive on VV, so the Lions–Stampacchia theorem gives exactly one weak solution. Without the contact part, the problem is the mixed boundary value problem of linear elasticity, governed by the Lamé equations in the isotropic case.

Status: solved. Signorini posed the problem in a course in 1959. Gaetano Fichera proved existence and uniqueness of the weak solution in the early 1960s, and this work started the theory of variational inequalities.
