Simple polytope
Builds on Convex polytopeVertex of a polytopeFacet
Definition
Let be a convex polytope of dimension . An edge of is a face of dimension . is simple if every vertex of lies in exactly edges of .
Remarks
Equivalently, every vertex of lies in exactly facets of . Every vertex of a -polytope lies in at least edges, so simple polytopes are those where this lower bound is always reached.
Example: the cube is simple. At the vertex the edges are the three segments from to , and , and by symmetry every vertex lies in edges.
Non-example: the octahedron is not simple, since the vertex lies in the edges joining it to and .
If contains the origin in its interior, then is simple if and only if its polar polytope is simplicial. Every polygon is simple.
