Definition
Let , , and let and be of class . Consider the control system with scalar control and running cost . Let be an extremal, that is, a quadruple that satisfies the conclusions of Pontryagin's maximum principle. The Hamiltonian along it is with , where the switching function is The control is singular on an interval of positive length if for all . An extremal arc on such an interval is a singular arc.
Remarks
Where the maximum condition forces , and where it forces . Where vanishes only at isolated times, the control is bang–bang. Example: minimize for , , , with free final state. The optimal control is on and on , with on and on . Here , , and the costate equation is with . So on , and the control is singular there, with the interior value . Non-example: in the same problem, the control is not singular on , since there. To find a singular control, one differentiates in time until appears and solves for .
