Singularity of a smooth map
Builds on Smooth manifoldDifferential of a smooth mapRank of a linear map
Definition
Let and be smooth manifolds of dimensions and , and let be a smooth map. For , let be the differential of at . The point is a singular point, or singularity, of if the rank of is less than . Otherwise is a regular point of . The set of singular points of is denoted .
Remarks
Example: , , has , of rank exactly when . So is the line , along which folds the plane. Non-example: for , , the differential has matrix of rank at every , so has no singular points. A point is regular if and only if is an immersion near it (when ) or a submersion near it (when ). For the singular points are the critical points of , where . Some authors call every point with not surjective a critical point; this agrees with the definition above when .
