Skew polynomial ring
Builds on Ore extensionRingRing homomorphism
Definition
Let be a ring with identity and let be a ring endomorphism with . The skew polynomial ring is the Ore extension . So it is a free left -module with basis , it contains as a subring, and for all .
Remarks
The product of monomials is . Example: let and let be complex conjugation. Then for , and , so commutes with all of and with ; it lies in the center. Example: for a field , nonzero, and , the ring has ; it is the quantum plane. Non-example: the first Weyl algebra, with , is an Ore extension with a nonzero derivation, so it is not of the form with this and this . When the ring is the ordinary polynomial ring . Some books call every Ore extension a skew polynomial ring.
