Smale's degree for proper Fredholm maps
Builds on Banach manifoldFredholm mapFredholm indexProper map
Definition
Let and be connected Banach manifolds, with separable. Let be a Fredholm map of Fredholm index that is proper. A point is a regular value of if is surjective for every . For a regular value , the fibre is finite. The Smale degree of is for any regular value of .
Remarks
The definition makes sense because regular values exist and the parity does not depend on . Regular values form a residual subset of by the Sard–Smale theorem. At a point of the derivative is a surjective Fredholm operator of index , hence an isomorphism, so is discrete; properness makes it compact, hence finite. The degree is also unchanged under a homotopy that is proper and is Fredholm of index at each time.
Example: , , is proper, and every smooth map between manifolds of the same finite dimension is Fredholm of index . The value is regular with the single preimage , so .
Non-example: , , is Fredholm of index but not proper. The regular value has one preimage and the regular value has none, so the parity depends on the point, and no degree is defined.
In finite dimensions, for compact connected manifolds of the same dimension, is the mod reduction of the degree of a continuous map. For compact perturbations of the identity on a Banach space, the Leray–Schauder degree gives an integer-valued theory.
