Definition
Let be a field and let be a sequence in that satisfies a recurrence relation for . The generating function method for this recurrence consists of these steps.
- Form the generating function in the ring of formal power series.
- Multiply the recurrence for index by a suitable power and sum over . This gives an equation for that involves the initial values.
- Solve this equation for .
- Read off as the coefficient of in the solution.
For a linear recurrence with constant coefficients , step 3 gives where is a polynomial of degree less than determined by .
Remarks
Example: the Fibonacci sequence has , and . Multiplying by and summing gives , so . Partial fractions with the roots of then give , where are the roots of . Non-example: for the nonlinear recurrence , step 2 does not give an equation in alone. The series is not a simple function of , so the method does not apply directly. The denominator in the constant-coefficient case is , where is the characteristic polynomial of the recurrence. Other generating functions, such as exponential ones, suit other recurrences, for example those with factors in the coefficients.
