Sparse grid

Builds on Quadrature rule

Definition

Let d≥1d \ge 1 and let X1⊆X2⊆X3⊆⋯X^1 \subseteq X^2 \subseteq X^3 \subseteq \cdots be a nested sequence of finite subsets of an interval II. For an integer q≥dq \ge d, the sparse grid of level qq in dimension dd is the set H(q,d)=⋃𝐢∈ℕd, i1,…,id≥1i1+⋯+id≤qXi1×Xi2×⋯×Xid⊆Id.H(q, d) = \bigcup_{\substack{\mathbf{i} \in \N^d,\ i_1, \dots, i_d \ge 1 \\ i_1 + \cdots + i_d \le q}} X^{i_1} \times X^{i_2} \times \cdots \times X^{i_d} \subseteq I^d. Let UiU^i be a quadrature rule on II with nodes XiX^i, let U0=0U^0 = 0, and let Δi=Ui−Ui−1\Delta^i = U^i - U^{i-1}. The Smolyak rule is A(q,d)=∑i1+⋯+id≤qΔi1⊗⋯⊗Δid.A(q, d) = \sum_{i_1 + \cdots + i_d \le q} \Delta^{i_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \Delta^{i_d}. It is a rule on IdI^d whose nodes lie in H(q,d)H(q, d).

Remarks

The full tensor grid Xq−d+1×⋯×Xq−d+1X^{q - d + 1} \times \cdots \times X^{q - d + 1} is the union of the products with every ij≤q−d+1i_j \le q - d + 1; the sparse grid replaces this box condition on 𝐢\mathbf{i} by the simplex condition i1+⋯+id≤qi_1 + \cdots + i_d \le q. Write ℓ=q−d+1\ell = q - d + 1 for the finest level in each direction. When XiX^i has about 2i2^i points and dd is fixed, the sparse grid has O(2ℓℓd−1)O(2^\ell \ell^{d-1}) points, while the full grid Xℓ×⋯×XℓX^\ell \times \cdots \times X^\ell has about 2ℓd2^{\ell d} points.

Example: take I=[−1,1]I = [-1, 1], X1={0}X^1 = \set{0} and X2={−1,0,1}X^2 = \set{-1, 0, 1}, and q=d+1q = d + 1. The allowed 𝐢\mathbf{i} are (1,…,1)(1, \dots, 1) and those with one entry 22 and the others 11. So H(d+1,d)H(d + 1, d) consists of the origin and the 2d2d points ±ej\pm e_j, which makes 2d+12d + 1 points.

Non-example: the full grid {−1,0,1}d\set{-1, 0, 1}^d is not H(d+1,d)H(d + 1, d) for d≥2d \ge 2, since it contains (1,1,0,…,0)(1, 1, 0, \dots, 0), which would need 𝐢\mathbf{i} with two entries equal to 22 and so i1+⋯+id=d+2>qi_1 + \cdots + i_d = d + 2 > q.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
