Definition

Let VV and WW be finite-dimensional real vector spaces, with dim⁡V=n\dim V = n. Let Sk=SkV∗⊗WS^k = S^k V^* \otimes W be the space of WW-valued homogeneous polynomials of degree kk on VV, with Sk=0S^k = 0 for k<0k < 0, and let Λj=ΛjV∗\Lambda^j = \Lambda^j V^* be the exterior power. Choose a basis e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n of VV with dual basis e1,…,ene^1, \dots, e^n, and let ∂i\partial_i be the derivative of polynomials in the direction eie_i. The Spencer operator is the linear map δ ⁣:Sk⊗Λj→Sk−1⊗Λj+1,δ(P⊗ω)=∑i=1n∂iP⊗(ei∧ω).\delta \colon S^k \otimes \Lambda^j \to S^{k-1} \otimes \Lambda^{j+1}, \qquad \delta(P \otimes \omega) = \sum_{i=1}^n \partial_i P \otimes (e^i \wedge \omega). It does not depend on the basis, and δ∘δ=0\delta \circ \delta = 0.

Let q≥1q \ge 1 and let gq⊆Sqg_q \subseteq S^q be a linear subspace, the symbol of a system of order qq. Put gk=Skg_k = S^k for k<qk < q, and for k≥qk \ge q define the prolongations inductively by gk+1={P∈Sk+1:∂vP∈gk for all v∈V}.g_{k+1} = \set{ P \in S^{k+1} : \partial_v P \in g_k \text{ for all } v \in V }. Then δ(gk⊗Λj)⊆gk−1⊗Λj+1\delta(g_k \otimes \Lambda^j) \subseteq g_{k-1} \otimes \Lambda^{j+1}, so the spaces gk⊗Λjg_k \otimes \Lambda^j form chain complexes, the Spencer complexes of gqg_q. The Spencer cohomology of gqg_q is Hk,j(gq)=ker⁡(δ ⁣:gk⊗Λj→gk−1⊗Λj+1)δ(gk+1⊗Λj−1).H^{k,j}(g_q) = \frac{\ker\big(\delta \colon g_k \otimes \Lambda^j \to g_{k-1} \otimes \Lambda^{j+1}\big)}{\delta(g_{k+1} \otimes \Lambda^{j-1})}.

Remarks

δ∘δ=0\delta \circ \delta = 0 because partial derivatives commute while ei∧el=−el∧eie^i \wedge e^l = -e^l \wedge e^i. Indexing conventions differ between authors, for instance by shifting kk.

Example: take gq=Sqg_q = S^q, the symbol of the empty system. Then gk=Skg_k = S^k for all kk, and for each m≥1m \ge 1 the sequence 0→Sm→Sm−1⊗Λ1→⋯→S0⊗Λm→00 \to S^m \to S^{m-1} \otimes \Lambda^1 \to \dots \to S^0 \otimes \Lambda^m \to 0 is exact. It is the degree mm part of the de Rham complex of polynomial forms, and it is dual to the Koszul complex. So Hk,j(Sq)=0H^{k,j}(S^q) = 0 whenever k+j≥1k + j \ge 1.

Example: for the Laplace equation on ℝ2\R^2, q=2q = 2, W=ℝW = \R and g2g_2 is the space of quadratic forms ax2+bxy+cy2a x^2 + b xy + c y^2 with a+c=0a + c = 0. Its prolongation gkg_k is the space of harmonic homogeneous polynomials of degree kk, which is 22-dimensional for each k≥1k \ge 1.

Consider a system of partial differential equations whose symbol has nonzero Spencer cohomology in the relevant degrees. Such a system may have hidden integrability conditions, and its power series solutions cannot always be built degree by degree.
