Definition

Let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer and let x>0x > 0. Let JνJ_\nu and YνY_\nu be the Bessel functions of the first kind and of the second kind. The spherical Bessel functions of order nn are jn(x)=π2x Jn+1/2(x),yn(x)=π2x Yn+1/2(x).j_n(x) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2x}}\, J_{n + 1/2}(x), \qquad y_n(x) = \sqrt{\frac{\pi}{2x}}\, Y_{n + 1/2}(x).

Remarks

They solve x2y′′+2xy′+(x2−n(n+1))y=0x^2 y'' + 2x y' + \left( x^2 - n(n+1) \right) y = 0, which is the radial equation of Δu+u=0\Delta u + u = 0 in spherical coordinates. Example: J1/2(x)=2πxsin⁡xJ_{1/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \sin x, so j0(x)=sin⁡xxj_0(x) = \frac{\sin x}{x}; one checks x2j0′′+2xj0′+x2j0=x(xj0)′′+x2j0=x(sin⁡x)′′+xsin⁡x=0x^2 j_0'' + 2x j_0' + x^2 j_0 = x (x j_0)'' + x^2 j_0 = x (\sin x)'' + x \sin x = 0. Likewise y0(x)=−cos⁡xxy_0(x) = -\frac{\cos x}{x}. In general jn(x)=(−x)n(1xddx)nsin⁡xxj_n(x) = (-x)^n \left( \frac{1}{x} \frac{d}{dx} \right)^n \frac{\sin x}{x}. The spherical Hankel functions are hn(1)=jn+iynh^{(1)}_n = j_n + i y_n and hn(2)=jn−iynh^{(2)}_n = j_n - i y_n; for instance h0(1)(x)=−ieixxh^{(1)}_0(x) = -i \frac{e^{ix}}{x}. A non-example: Jn(x)J_n(x) for an integer nn is a cylindrical, not a spherical, Bessel function; it is not elementary.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
